Storing all of the different foods that you keep in your kitchen can take years to master. Some foods require a cool, dark space for storage; other foods are best kept out at room temperature; still others should stay in the fridge; and some foods even require room temperatures to ripen and then cooler temperatures to prevent over-ripening. To help you master the art that is storing food and ingredients in your kitchen, here is a brief list of foods that store especially well in a cabinet—a dark and dry storage space.
Garlic is best stored in a cool, dark environment, such as in your kitchen cabinet. Simply place your garlic bulbs in a mesh bag, wire basket, or paper bag with holes punched throughout before setting them in your cabinet to give them some ventilation. Resist the urge to keep your garlic in the fridge in an attempt to make it last longer; the cold will spoil the taste and give your garlic bulbs an undesirable texture.
Olive oil is sensitive to light, hence why you so often see it sold in darker colored glass containers. For this reason, it’s best to store your olive oil in the back of a dark cabinet. Just be sure to choose a cooler cabinet that is well away from any sources of heat. Most other oils—except for nut-based oils, which store best in the fridge—will store best this way as well.
Dried fruits should always be kept in airtight containers, away from any potential sources of moisture or insect contamination. A kitchen cabinet provides a great dry and dark storage area for helping preserve the life of your dried fruit as long as possible.
Nuts can easily go rancid after prolonged light and heat exposure due to the oils they contain, making the cabinet a great place for storing them. Be sure to keep nuts stored in airtight containers, especially because they tend to absorb odors from the environment around them.
Spices store especially well in cabinets because keeping them away from strong sources of light and heat will help to preserve their freshness and flavor. Light can even cause some spices and herbs to lose their color over time, giving them a less-than-appealing appearance. Keep spices stored away in cabinets or built-in spice racks, especially if you keep them in clear glass containers.
Like spices, loose teas are sensitive to both light and heat, making a kitchen cabinet a great storage location for them. Loose teas are also particularly sensitive to air and moisture, meaning that you should always store loose tea in an airtight container such as a tea tin or canister.
There are two rules that you should keep in mind when it comes to storing food in cabinets. First, foods should not be stored in cabinets above the range, where they will be exposed to higher levels of heat and moisture. Second, you should not store any foods under the kitchen sink, either, where they will also be susceptible to moisture.
