08 May Built-In Cabinet Racks for Spice and Why They’re Nice
There are several spaces hiding in your kitchen that are going to waste because they’re not used. Likewise, some objects are taking up valuable cabinet space in a place that’s not efficient. One way to change that is by adding a built-in spice rack.
A built-in spice rack takes up a small amount of surface area, so you can put it almost anywhere. It can hold dozens of spices in just three-inches of horizontal space – a thin section of cabinetry that was otherwise unusable. A spice rack is great for deep cabinets or hard to reach areas because it incorporates every inch from front to back, and top to bottom. Talk about efficiency!
Spices are one of those ingredients you want to have quick access to when cooking. It’s a hassle searching through a cupboard to find the right seasoning. Spices like to hide behind each other and tip over easily. A rack keeps them in the upright position and allows you to see all your spices at once. You’re more likely to use them if they’re easy to access.
Some spice racks are made for countertops, but building a rack inside a cabinet frees up needed counter space. If you keep your spice containers on a shelf or in a drawer, move them to a rack so you can use the extra space for something else. Spices also store best in a cool, dark spot – yet another reason to move them off the counter and into a cabinet.
When organizing the spice rack, put your most popular spices on the rack that’s easiest to reach. Ground spices should be replaced after one year. A good way to keep track is by writing the purchase date on each container. For spices that last longer, buy them whole such as peppercorns, cinnamon sticks, and nutmeg.
If you’re just starting a spice collection and don’t know where to begin, might we suggest a few basics: salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, cinnamon, italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes. Then you can start branching out to flavors like oregano, rosemary, basil, paprika, and chili powder. Place them all in your built-in rack and cooking will never be the same.
